ST. HELENA, CA – The Improvise Adapt Overcome Foundation (IAOF) officially launched this week with a public demonstration of exoskeleton technology at the beautiful Rombauer Vineyards. John Patricio, a Marine Veteran, author, and founder of IAOF, used the event to mark a significant milestone: his first public walk using the ReWalk robotic system.
“I’ve been training with the exoskeleton for over a year,” John said. “It’s not easy; it’s a lot of work. But using this system provides a level of mobility that I didn’t think was possible a few years ago.”
The ReWalk is a wearable robotic exoskeleton that provides powered hip and knee motion, allowing individuals with spinal cord injuries to stand upright and walk. After intensive training, John utilized the device to navigate the Rombauer vineyard grounds. John was first introduced to ReWalk during his own recovery journey after seeing a fellow Marine, a young woman who had survived an IED blast in Afghanistan, walking with the aid of the exoskeleton.
This launch emphasized that mobility is a team effort. Key partners recognized during the event included:
- The VA: John highlighted the Department of Veterans Affairs for their consistent support in his training and rehabilitation.
- The Board of Directors: The IAOF now has a formal board in place to manage the foundation’s growth and programs.
- Community Partners: The event was organized and hosted by Rombauer Vineyards, demonstrating the role of local businesses in veteran advocacy.
- Friends and Family: John’s family and friends gathered to celebrate the historic walk and to show their support for the foundation, the book, and John’s goals.
Moving forward, the IAOF will focus on raising awareness through public walks to motivate others, just as John was motivated during his early recovery.
“From skiing and golfing to taking these first steps in a public place, this journey is a testament to the power of a strong support system,” John stated. “This is just the beginning. We have a clear mission, and we are ready to change the world for people with mobility challenges.”
